Cam Newton positive for COVID-19: Patriots delay trip to Kansas City, send players home Saturday (report)

UPDATE: The NFL has announced that the Patriots-Chiefs game has been postponed to Monday or Tuesday.

The New England Patriots were supposed to fly out Saturday at 1 p.m. for their Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, that game is in jeopardy as the Patriots are now awaiting further test results and instruction from the NFL following the news that quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19 and will not play Sunday. According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini and Adam Schefter, the Patriots have sent players home and are now in standby.

One source told Schefter that there is “no way they can travel today.”

The Patriots confirmed in a statement that they learned Friday night that a player had tested positive for coronavirus. Now, the team is working with the NFL and doctors and “will follow their guidance regarding our scheduled trip to Kansas City and game against the Chiefs.”

The Patriots reported no additional cases as of Saturday morning. However, as the Tennessee Titans outbreak this past week showed, COVID-19 cases can spread quickly and take time to show in testing. The Titans’ Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was postponed to Week 7 as a result of the team’s outbreak. It remains unseen what will happen with the Patriots.
