Meghan and Harry and Kate and William have been exchanging gifts

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been exchanging gifts as they celebrated the festive season ahead of Christmas day next week.

Presents have been sent “back and forth between the entire royal family”, People reports, as they prepare to experience their first Christmas apart due to the pandemic.

Meghan, Harry and their 19-month-old son Archie will be enjoying their first Christmas in their new Montecito home in California, which the family has been “excited to decorate for Christmas”.

Meanwhile, Kate and William are said to be unsure about their Christmas plans after the Queen cancelled the royal family’s traditional Christmas lunch at Sandringham this year.

It is not known whether they will stay at Kensington Palace, or travel to their country residence of Anmer Hall in Norfolk, on the Queen’s Sandringham estate.

“It is so difficult,” William recently said during his royal train tour across the UK with Kate. “We are still trying to make plans. It’s difficult to know what to do for the best.”

The 94-year-old monarch and Prince Philip, 99, will remain at Windsor Castle for the festive period, which is where they relocated during the two lockdowns in March and November.

This year will mark the first time since 1987 that a monarch has spent Christmas at Windsor Castle rather than Sandringham.

“They are fortunate to spend Christmas with their family every year, but they understand that their family will have competing demands over the Christmas period and are content to have a quiet festive season this year,” a source added to the publication.

It’s believed that Charles and Camilla – who recently released their very floral 2020 Christmas card – will visit the Queen and Philip over the Christmas break, but it is not known whether the Kate and William and their children – Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2, will be popping in too.

The Cambridge family also released their Christmas card last week, which was taken at Anmer Hall in Norfolk.
